France is currently a step ahead of Italy. As the winners of the 2020-21 edition, they are once again among the top contenders for the title this year, alongside Spain. This match will be intriguing, with both teams undergoing managerial changes and their coaches under pressure. Additionally, both squads are in the midst of a transitional phase.
France left the EURO deeply wounded after losing to Spain. Not only did they fail to reach the final, their primary objective given they had the strongest squad in the tournament, but their performance throughout was lackluster. Despite having some of the best offensive players in the world, they struggled to create chances and only managed to score 4 goals in 6 matches: 2 own goals, 1 penalty, and just 1 goal from open play – Kolo Muani's goal against Spain, a match they lost 2-1.
For France to win this tournament, significant improvements are needed. However, they certainly have the quality and firepower to make the necessary adjustments. Some changes in the lineup are expected, especially in midfield where Zaire-Emery could play a key role alongside Tchouameni. Up front, we could see four attackers: Griezmann, Mbappe, Dembélé, and Thuram. Mbappe had a poor EURO performance (partly due to the mask he wore) and will be looking to redeem himself this time around.
Mendy is out due to injury, but Theo Hernandez is expected to fill in seamlessly.
On the other hand, Italy comes off a disappointing EURO campaign, where they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Switzerland. Spalletti remains as coach, but their 4-3-3 system, which was ineffective during the tournament, is likely to change. Their match against Switzerland was one of Italy's worst in recent years.
The new-look Italy is based on a tactical shift to a 3-5-2 formation, relying on players familiar with that system from Inter Milan, who are a class above. With this setup, players like Bastoni, Di Marco, and Frattesi should be able to perform at their best. However, key midfielder Barella is out due to injury.
Italy continues to struggle in attack, lacking top-level strikers. Scamacca is sidelined with a long-term injury, and Moise Kean is, at best, an average option.
I don't expect this to be an exciting, high-scoring match. France has been struggling to create chances, and Italy is still adapting to their new system with three defenders. Given these factors, it's unlikely we'll see a fast-paced, end-to-end game with numerous opportunities.
Italy will likely focus on defending, minimizing risks, and trying to capitalize on counterattacks. However, Mbappe and his teammates should be able to find spaces and secure a win, given their superior quality.
France has far more talent and potential. Italy, still in the process of rebuilding, will need more time to return to their best, and facing France is not an ideal scenario for that.
WALES - TURKEY
This pick is based on what I've seen from both teams recently, particularly Turkey in the EURO.
With a new era beginning after the appointment of Craig Bellamy, Wales will be desperate to make an early statement. Their recent results have been disappointing, and they will be looking for a win to boost their confidence. They are coming off two awful performances in June friendlies: a goalless draw against Gibraltar (one of the weakest teams in Europe) and a heavy 4-0 defeat against Slovakia.
It’s worth remembering that Wales finished behind group winners Turkey and Croatia in Euro 2024 qualifying, which forced them into the playoff route, where they eventually lost to Poland on penalties. Points dropped to Turkey — a 2-0 defeat in Samsun following Joe Morrell’s first-half red card and a 1-1 draw at Cardiff City Stadium — cost Wales dearly in the race for automatic qualification, as did taking just one point from two games against Armenia. Turkey went on to reach the quarterfinals of the EURO, but were fortunate to get a draw in Cardiff. Johnson had what looked like a clear penalty denied at 1-0, and Turkey equalized with a controversial spot-kick.
Regarding the squad, Aaron Ramsey remains the Wales captain under Bellamy, but Ramsey hasn't played for Wales in nearly 12 months due to injury. He has completed all four of Cardiff's Championship games this season, but the Bluebirds are winless and sit at the bottom of the table. Bellamy is a big fan and believes his former teammate can still be a threat in the final third, so the key may be finding the right system to maximize Ramsey's attacking instincts.
Brennan Johnson has yet to impress consistently for Wales, and his stats don’t look promising. The Tottenham forward has scored only three times in 28 appearances, although many of his early caps were as a substitute. Johnson, who is one of the fastest players in the Premier League, is now 23 and has a full season under his belt at Spurs. Bellamy claims Johnson is worth much more than the £47.5 million Spurs paid Nottingham Forest for him, and the winger is expected to play a major role in Bellamy's new-look Wales.
On the other hand, Turkey shone at the EURO, defeating Georgia and the Czech Republic to reach the knockout stage, and then overcoming Austria in the round of 16. Vincenzo Montella’s side eventually lost 2-1 to the Netherlands, with the Dutch coming from behind to score twice in the final 20 minutes of their quarterfinal in Berlin.
I was really impressed with their quality and performances. Yes, they lacked experience in key moments (especially in the final minutes against the Netherlands), but they showed they are a very talented team, with young stars like Arda Güler and Yildiz free to express themselves, supported by experienced players like Calhanoglu.
Honestly, I don’t see any advantage on the Welsh side, as they’ve been awful in recent months. Turkey comes into this game full of confidence after the EURO, with a lot of quality and unstoppable players up front, who are thriving under this coach and system.
